Toad in the Hole

Toad in the Hole is a classic British dish. I only had it for the first time this year however when my housemate made it and it was delicious.

Since then I have made it twice and kind of want to have it again tonight now I am thinking about it..

Toad in the Hole
Serves 4
300ml milk
225g plain flour
4 eggs
8 sausages
Oil
S&P

- Set the oven to about 180 degrees (fan).
- Blend the milk, eggs and S&P together until frothy. Leave for at least twenty minutes.
- Heat the oil until hot in a roasting tray. Add the sausages and cook until they are how you like them - around 15 mins for me.
- Add the flour slowly to the egg/milk mixture and blend until totally combined.
- Pour the mixture over the sausages in the tray (get rid of excess fat if there is a lot of it first) and put in the oven until risen and golden brown. This should take about half an hour.

I think it's best served drowned in gravy but it's also popular with peas and/or mashed potato.
Pictured is half this recipe for two people.

Enjoy! :)

  1. Hi JessieKay!
Thanks for your comment on my blog. Re: train tickets prices to London for the Walthamstow meet-up ... Walthamstow Central station is within 'Zone 3' for tube travel. From Brighton there are direct trains (with no changes) into 'London Bridge' station. There's a 09.34 'FIRST CAPITAL CONNECT' train service to London Bridge station (it arrives at 10.32). From London Bridge it's approx. 40-45mins tube/underground journey time to 'Walthamstow Central' station. The cheapest tickets I can see start at £15.00 - that's for the 'SUPER OFF-PEAK TRAVELCARD' which will include unlimited travel on the tube and buses for that date (no booking in advance is required for that ticket price). If you did decide to come along then you'd need to ask at Brighton station for "The 'SUPER OFF-PEAK TRAVELCARD' to include London Underground travel for Zones 1 to 3." Don't forget to allow an extra 20mins to queue-up to buy your ticket in the morning though LOL! (Note: What you DO NOT WANT TO DO is to ask for a return ticket to London Bridge - because you will not be able to use that ticket on the tube/Underground/buses, and you'd end up paying extra money for your tube tickets eekk!). The £15.00 ticket prices ONLY allows you to travel on 'First Capital Connect services' - but you can use any 'First Capital Connect service' train to come back home on your return journey. If you wanted instead to be able to travel back home from any train service - for example if you wanted to come back from 'London Victoria' station (which has 'SOUTHERN' train services back to Brighton) then your cheapest train ticket is £19 (again another 'Super Off-peak Day Travelcard'). The £19 can be used on any train back home to Brighton.

I hope that helps you :) Great if you can come - but chill if you can't, I'm pretty sure we're gonna have another Brighton meet-up in Summer!

  2. Thanks so much for that! That's actually very helpful info, I never realised I could get a train ticket and tube ticket together, especially for £15! I always buy the day travelcard for the tube seperately. Unfortunately having looked again at the date I realise it's in Easter hols and so I'm away, but will keep my eyes peeled for any more meet ups, especially in Brighton!
